Friday Five: Mary Jane in the Bedroom

Are you curious about inviting cannabis into your sex life? Take 5 minutes for 5 nuggets of advice for enjoying marijuana high sex.

  1. Pleasure Peaks

A 2019 study published on the National Library of Medicine (NIH) studied women who used marijuana before sex; it was found that “Most women reported increases in sex drive, improvement in orgasm, decrease in pain.”

In another study of 201 men & women, it was found that (73.8%) reported increased sexual satisfaction, (74.3%) reported an increased sensitivity to touch, (65.7%) reported increased intensity of orgasms.

Outside of scientific studies, references in pop culture and anecdotes of amazing Mary Jane-induced sex are everywhere. Maybe your highest climax is yet to come!

2. Know Your Herb

First, a quick lesson for those new to the plant. Cannabis contains hundreds of chemical compounds that affect the body, the two main ones being THC & CBD. THC is responsible for the psychoactive effect, while CBD is more often used medicinally to reduce inflammation and relieve anxiety. You will not get high from products containing only CBD. You can find topicals, edibles and smokables of both compounds. There are many different strains (varieties) of marijuana with their own unique properties, flavors and terpene combinations.

When buying cannabis, don’t be shy to ask about the quality and strain; it’s helpful to know what you’re intaking. Sativa strains typically stimulate a boost of energy and a great mood. Indica strains, on the other hand, often create more of a ‘body high’ and feelings of relaxation. Hybrid strains are great because they combine both attributes so you can stay energized while still feeling increased sensations within the body.

For sex, it’s best to start slow to avoid getting too sedated to make it to the bedroom. Dr. Jordan Tishler, MD, Harvard physician and medical cannabis therapeutics specialist at InhaleMD, “advises his patients to focus on dosing and method of delivery.”

3. Slow & Steady

Disclaimer: This content is intended for those of legal and medical age to consume cannabis products. As always, do your research and consume responsibly.

Healthline recommends trying solo sex first if you’ve never combined cannabis with sex. If you enjoy it, invite a partner next time and start with a low dose. It’s best to use inhalation or tinctures where the effects will be felt sooner and you can build upon your dose, as opposed to edibles which can take a while to digest and kick in and tend to be a little more squirrely to nail down with dosage. As always, consent and clear boundaries are a must.

4. CBD Sensuality

If you want to dip into the benefits of the plant without the psychoactive effect, consider trying a CBD-infused lubrication.

“CBD can help to decrease inflammation and potentially alleviate pelvic pain. Various studies have explored the relationship between CBD and chronic pain conditions, including arthritis and inflammatory and neuropathic pain. CBD helps to relax your muscles, which can be especially helpful for those suffering from certain pelvic pain disorders.”
