Intro to Sex and Religion

What’s sacred for you?

“There's an increasing body of evidence to suggest that we need to think about religion in a different way: not as a process of training or indoctrination, but as arising from some deep-seated instincts, hardwired into our brains and then shaped by our cultures. This is more like the way we think about sex, emotions, and relationships,” says Associate Professor in Values in Care from Staffordshire University, Peter Kevern.

Religion, much like sexuality, tends to be an essential part of our communities and greatly influences the way we understand and live through our lives, our sexuality included. To round out this 2021, we’ve decided to explore how the world’s five major religions—Judaism, Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism—integrate sex into their worldview.

Here are some questions we’ll be addressing on December 2021:

🔵What's the relationship between religion and sexuality?
🔵What do religions like Catholicism or Buddhism say about sex?
🔵Is masturbation allowed in the world's major religions?
🔵How regulated are sexual practices within religious communities?
🔵What are some helpful questions we can ask ourselves to navigate the way religion plays a role in our sexuality?

Write Your Sexual Biography

We invite you to set aside a few uninterrupted minutes, grab a pen and paper, and ask yourself these questions before going any further into this month’s theme:

🌫️On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do your sexual thoughts, feelings, and practices follow your religious convictions?
🌫️Have you left yourself at the second levelto one side due to religious expectations? What’s an If yes, can you give us an example of this?
🌫️How do you value both yourself and your faith at the same time?
