Friday Five: Reflect.Empower.Unite

June is here, and with it comes Pride Month—a time to celebrate, support, and advocate for the LGBTIQ+ community. Pride Month is not just about parades and rainbows: It's a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and the importance of embracing diversity in all its forms.

During this month My Sex Bio wants to invite you to unite, reflect, empower yourself and others, and support the LGBTIQ+ community in order to create a more inclusive and equitable world.

Keep reading to discover 5 ways to embody the spirit of Pride Month. 🌈

1. Remember LGBTIQ+ Icons

"Hope will never be silent."

— Harvey Milk

"No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us."

— Marsha P. Johnson

"We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are."

— Sylvia Rivera

"It's revolutionary for any trans person to choose to be seen and visible in a world that tells us we should not exist."

— Laverne Cox

2. Reflect

Reflection allows us to contemplate on experiences and challenges, appreciate our achievements, and learn and grow with intentionality. This Pride Month, take some time to understand how you or others have changed and evolved, for better or worse. Some prompts to consider:

  • When did you first start to consider your sexual orientation? What were your feelings and perceptions then, and how have they changed since?

  • How about for your gender identity?

  • How have your relationships and environment affected exploring your sexual orientation or gender identity?

  • What strategies have you used to overcome challenges regarding accepting and expressing your gender and sexual identity?

  • What advice would you offer to someone beginning their journey of self-discovery?

3. Empower

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

— Nelson Mandela

Education is a powerful tool for empowerment. Take the time to learn about the diverse experiences within the LGBTIQ+ community. By educating ourselves, we can better advocate for equality and inclusion.

4. Unite

Pride Month is a time for unity. Show your support by participating in Pride events, whether in person or virtually. Join local LGBTIQ+ organizations, volunteer your time, or donate to causes that support the community. Solidarity means standing together, supporting one another, and amplifying LGBTIQ+ voices.
