What do YOU consider a job?

Is it a monetary reckoning for tasks you accomplish? Perhaps it’s your knowledge? Have you ever thought that a job can be considered as selling your expertise, wisdom, proficiency and talent? And that, by selling, you obtain goods, money, and/or recognition in return?

We’ve likely all seen—somewhere around our cities, in movies and even just browsing online— how there’s an industry around sex. People have an interest in paying for sex and erotic services, as one would for any other good or service, and people of all genders are making an income from their sexual experiences. The industry is filled with individuals who willingly engage intermixed with those who are coerced into the scene.

Debate surrounds whether or not this type of work should be universally legalized; legalizing, decriminalizing or criminalizing sex work all have important effects on sex workers around the world, effects that have as much to do with their well-being as they have to do with their ability to earn a living.

Here are some questions we’ll be addressing this October 2021 about SEX WORK:

  • What is sex work and which activities can be considered so?

  • Can therapy become sex work? What is sexual surrogacy? Why is it controversial?

  • Is sex work a crime? What’s at the heart of the controversy around the legalization of sex work?

  • Why do people become sex workers?

  • Is there a link between sex work and ability to report sexual assault?

  • How can we support sex workers?

Write Your Sexual Biography

As we move forward on this topic, we invite you to set aside, get comfy, find yourself something to write with and consider the following:

✏ Have you felt shame about the number of partners you’ve been with?

✏ If so, what does that shame look like? What do you tell yourself?

✏ Would you tell that to others?

✏ How might this compare with the shame faced by sex workers?
